Camping, a Munro and a pub.

Camping, a Munro and a pub.

Postby Stu101 » Mon Jan 16, 2017 12:36 am

Managed to convince the girlfriend to come away on a couple of camping trips this year (wild or otherwise), so we can add to the old Munro count.

However one of her conditions is that it within walking distance of a decent pub. I have no problem with this,

Any recommendations then?

Cheers all.

Plenty of Munros near all these:-

Village Inn, Arrochar. Great food and beer.

Clachaig, Glencoe. Ditto.

Cluanie Inn, Glen Shiel. Ditto.

Here are a few campsites I would suggest.
Beinglas farm at Inverarnan. Great site on the West Highland Way. It has a good bar on site plus the Drovers Inn about 200 yards away. The munro Beinn Chabhair usual starting point is from the campsite.
Glen Nevis campsite for Ben Nevis has a bar on site and the Ben Nevis Inn across the river at Achintee. Walking distance to Fort William centre also.
Already suggested the Red Squirrel campsite with the Clachaig Bar within a mile and on the doorstep of some of the finest hills.
The Kingshouse Hotel in Glencoe allows camping on its grounds also.
Sligachan on Skye, pub and campsite plus scary hills.
Bunroy campsite at Roy Bridge is a good campsite and has 2 pubs nearby
For a wild camp my favourite is probably Knoydart though we camped about 3 or 4 miles from the pub Im sure you could get closer without annoying anyone. And some of the best and remotest hills in Scotland.
I guess the list is endless and I look forward to seeing other folks suggestions
All the best :D

Three of my favourite things all in the one thread title! I just had to read it! I would concur with all of the above. :D

The Kingshouse is closed for renovations until early 2018, but there is a temporary bar open (which I haven't been in). Not sure about the camping situation during the renovations.

Other than that - those are my criteria too and I concur enthusiastically with all the above. I've also stayed many nights on the site at Morvich which is not out of staggering distance from the Kintail Lodge Hotel and within reach of plenty of Munros.

Aye they used to serve a selection of different steaks, served sizzling on a hot 6 foot long claymore

I once went there with a schizophrenic pal, who ordered everything on the menu while I was in the loo - the whole village got a feed..

You can camp at the Glencoe Mountain Resort across from the Kingshouse.

You could always "wild" camp down Glen Etive with the Glesga Keelies. No pub but there should be plenty buckfast knocking about. :D
