Good (ShortHike Between Pitlochry and Torridon

Good (ShortHike Between Pitlochry and Torridon

Postby MartinJac » Mon May 22, 2017 8:33 pm

Hello!
I’m looking for some suggestions… A friend and I are away to Torridon in a couple of weeks, driving up from Pitlochry in a rented car. I’m looking for a good walk that we can do on the way there, sort of before the real walking begins in Torridon. The trouble is, we won’t get the car till later than I’d like (probably about 11am) and it’s at least a three hour drive to Torridon, so we won’t get a full day’s walking in before we have to get to our hotel around 8.

So I was wondering if anyone could suggest a (hopefully spectacular) short walk that we could do along the way? I reckon that realistically (allowing for a bit of faffing about at either end) we’ve probably got around 4-5 hours of actual walking time. Obviously Torridon is going to be the highlight of the trip, but I’d like to squeeze in something else too to really make the most of things. My friend isn’t from Scotland, so I want to show him as much of what Scotland has to offer as I can.

Thanks in advance!

Ben Vrackie would be a possibility. Good path right the way to the summit.

I was going to say that, but if they're staying in Pitlochry first they might have done it already?

Schiehallion would be another option - something in Perthshire would be a good contrast to the far north.

Ben Vrackie is a good option: https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/perthshire/ben-vrackie.shtml
Assuming you are driving via Inverness, it might be nice for a first time visitor to see something of the Cairngorms area. Possibilities would include
Creag Dubh https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/cairngorms/creag-dubh.shtml
Meall a'Bhuachaille https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/cairngorms/meallabhuachaille.shtml
Geal-charn Mor https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/cairngorms/geal-charn-mor.shtml
or if the weather isn't too good
Loch an Eilein https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/cairngorms/loch-an-eilein.shtml

I would personally prefer to get the driving out the way and just do something short near torridon. Lots of great Corbetts to do up there. So far my favourite has been Meall a' Ghiubhais which could be done in 4 hrs and if pushed for time the mountain trail is still a great walk. https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/torridon/Meallaghuibhais.shtml.

Fionn Bheinn is a great wee walk that offers good views of Torridon, Fisherfield and the Fannaichs. It is close to Torridon and only takes 4-5 hours at a reasonably casual pace.

South of Achnasheen you could try Moruisg as another "quicker" option.

Fionn Bheinn has more character than Moruisg though, but is another option for sure.

You will LOVE Torridon. One of my favourite glens. It is mind-blowingly beautiful !

Enjoy...

Thanks everyone - some great suggestions here!

Fionn Bheinn looks like a real contender, but I'm also tempted by Loch an Eilein - I've got a wee inflatable kayak that hasn't had an outing in a while...

Looks like I'm really spoilt for choice. Looking forward to checking out all the options properly when I get a bit more time!
