Overnight camp on Goatfell

Overnight camp on Goatfell

Postby 2m0rot » Tue Jun 13, 2017 10:33 pm

In late July my friend and I are planning walking the hill but looking to take in the sunset & rise (hopefully) and are looking to camp overnight. First of all, is it like Loch Lomond where you need to have a permit? or can you find a nice secluded spot to pitch tent as long as you leave the area it as you find it? Secondly, where would you suggest the best place to camp would be? We'll be looking to camp fairly high up as I'll be putting a ham radio antenna up to activate the mountain. I've walked plenty hills but never spent the night.

Cheers in advance.

It's only Loch Lomond with the bye-laws than ban camping, you'll be fine up on Goat Fell :) The first part is through forest and thick bracken but just coming up to the boulder field there are grassier patches. From memory there was a nice grassy bit just off the summit, but I guess that would depend on the wind direction whether that would be much use!

Goatfell summit is quite limited for pitching spots. I would suggest looking at camping on caisteal abhail instead. Plenty of spots to choose from up there and there's the bonus of a fresh water spring not far from the summit.

With you expecting a sunrise/sunset and clear weather just take a sleeping bag for the summit of Goatfell that's what I done one time.

I'll second that. I'm sure there was a grassy patch to the west side of the summit.
I was up there in May. I was heading up late afternoon, everyone else was heading down. there was only 1 other person at the summit.
If the weather is good you should have stunning night!

This will be the grassy patch mentioned, just a couple of meters below the summit. I got a decent size two man tent pitched there, but still, Caisteal abhail is a much better option for a summit camp.

Caisteal Abhail also qualifies as a Marilyn, do the two?

All Corbetts quality as a Marilyn. Same applies to Grahams.

The OP asking the question is intending to operate a 'amateur radio station' on GoatFell as a participant in SOTA (Summits on the Air) who use the Marilyn lists.
I just mentioned Caisteal Abhail as its another SOTA summit.
I've already did GoatFell way back in '12(I think) as an amateur radio op.
