Press & Journal - Do they know their hills?

Press & Journal - Do they know their hills?

Postby Quincy » Sat Jun 24, 2017 1:44 pm

So here's the question...I'm staying with my folks for the weekend and leafing through the papers we came across a lovely mountain picture which looks like it was taken at dawn. Underneath the caption reads Stac Pollaidh but on closer inspection it looks more like Suilven. Now I know mountains can look completely different from certain angles but these two are very distinctive normally. If you've bought a P & J today it's on page 30. It's lead to much discussion in our family and looking out of old photos! Afraid I don't have the technology to hand to upload the picture. Can anyone confirm our suspicions?

If I try searching by Stac Polliaidh on its site, it only gives me older articles. Are there any other key words I can try? What is it about?

I'm guessing it is in the nc500 article which is behind a paywall? You could always take a photo and upload it.

I saw it in the P & J too - definitely Suilven and not Stac Pollaidh. Not sure whether the mistake is down to the P & J or confusion on the part of the photographer who submitted the photo. Mind you, I remember a headline in the P & J a few years ago announcing that a climber had been rescued from a "West Coast" mountain; reading the article revealed it to have been Coire an t-Sneachda, Cairngorm. Now I know the 'Gorms are further west than Aberdeen, but still ... .

PS ... the angle of the photo suggests it was taken somewhere in the vicinity of Loch Craggie on the A837 between Bonar Bridge and Ledmore. The distance is over 12 miles so a telephoto lens was doubtless employed.
