Memorymap - 100km grid ref

Memorymap - 100km grid ref

Postby Bedsforsleepypeople » Thu Aug 17, 2017 12:40 pm

Hi,
I have memory map which seem to work quite well for me printing A4 maps. The only trouble is they don't show the 100km letter grid references like some other mapping software. This could be very important in an emergency situation for locations such as the Cairngorms where grids NN, NO, NS and NT join. Anyone know if there is a setting that can give this info?
Thanks

Well yes, that what i end up doing.
Would like to think all this technology which is meant to make life easier might have had this capability though.

It's what I do too. If you do use technology to add more information on MM, I find it can end up obscuring too much of the original detail on the map. When I used an old Garmin E-trex GPS, I used to write the waypoint numbers on the map printout in pen. Time consuming, but did the job. Now with a mapping GPS, I don't have to do that anymore, but I still label the grid lines where necessary and write down the grid section letters.

Hello,
Good point....critical if relaying a precise location.
As said Memory Maps give a read out using (the curser thing on screen) of the co-ordinates that includes the Two letters for the 100 kl square. The work done prior to the trip, route card.. etc.
But not everyone uses Memory Maps on the PC or uses a GPS when out on the hill.
I seem to recall that as far as the Cairngorm maps go....in the past the maps had all of the 100 kl. letters printed on the map at that 'celebrated' cluster of four of the 100 kl. squares. This isn't the case now the new maps don'y show this.

I haven't tried using MM or similar (I use Basecamp with a Garmin Oregon 600) plus 1:50000 maps loaded and paper maps).

If I needed a grid ref with letters on the hill, then I could use the Mark a Way point function it has..............press the button on the side of unit and then on the screen comes the grid ref of the point marked with the 100km letters prefixed: and this can be saved: it also gives an elevation at the saved point plus the date and time. You can also display the way point on to the map and switch back and forth between map and way point data.

Would something like that meet your need on the hill?

This will not work on a printout!

Maybe I'm missing the point, but if you know you're in the Cairngorms, don't the numbers tell you which square you're in?

I mean, you can be at 999999 in one, and 001001 in another, and 999001 in a third, and 001999 in a fourth (if I haven't muddled my numbers), but you can't be at the same grid reference in another square without being 100km away.

Currently i write the two letters on print off maps as a reminder as MM does not do this automatically. I know there are other software programs which do. so all i was asking if anyone knows if there was a setting to change this.

@prog99

Yes, I had worked that out, but if there isn't a way to get it on the printout then at least a waypoint when you are on the hill will be better than nothing...................
