How many miles did I cover?

How many miles did I cover?

Postby Lightfoot2017 » Wed Oct 18, 2017 1:32 pm

Can anyone help with a mileage Q&A please?

Couple of years back, I walked from the Sugar bowl car park, through the Chalamain Gap, down the Lairig Ghru, down to the Corrour bothy. I then bagged Devils Point, Cairn Toul, Angels Peak and then Brairiach before heading back (via the Gap) to my starting point at the Sugarbowl.

It was without doubt one of my most enjoyable days in the hills.  :D

I've tried figuring out how many miles I covered that day, but I'm struggling.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks in advance.

You can use the Walk Highlands maps to work out your route distance (not accounting for slope angles). https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/maps/

For some reason its not working right now (was slow last night too), or I'd do a quick rough measurement for you, but you just click points along the route and it adds it up for you.

I'd guess about 30km at least.

roughly 30-32 kilometers....for miles x 5 then divide by 8.
Why bother with miles when your maps will all be in kilometers :)

A quick click along the obvious route, using paths / bridges etc where available, looks like 22 miles, or 35.4 km, with 2130 metres of ascent.
That's based on the WH map page suggested by Mal, so YMMV. I suspect that the real-world mileage may be higher to allow for zig-zagging, micro-navigating boulder fields and wandering over to take in the views, at least if you're anything like me

Interesting you should mention this route.

The WH description gives it as 36km and 1820m of climbing - however just about every account I've read (including my own) has the ascent as quite a lot more.

I think my day said it was 36.9k and 2400m of climbing.

I understand it's not an exact science mapping the routes but by sticking to the obvious route and ridges to come out 600m of climbing different does seem to be a lot.

Is the WH description just way out on this one?

The mileage dos seem about right though but as people mention doesn't account for zig zagging etc.

Just as a matter of passing interest.

When I go out I usually know, in general terms, the distance and ascent of the route I'm planning. This then allows me to estimate how long I'll be out for the day as part of general route planning.

A matter of minor importance in the long days of summer, becoming progressively more important as the days shorten.

I'm wondering, given your question in the OP, how you planned your day/plan your days?

I like that old adage, "Failing to plan is planning to have a wonderful, unexpected adventure."
