Winter conditions

Re: Winter conditions

When/if you get above the Glen Nevis Gorge [keep well back from the edge, look out for stone-fall], be careful of the shoogly bridge. If you don't have to cross it, don't bother. And if you do cross it, don't look down - the swirling waters beguile and bewitch you, mesmerising you until you fall in. Then you're dead. Welcome to Scotland.

And don't put your rucksack down, as it will be devoured by rodents.

Watching this thread, along with every weather forecast and Facebook conditions group I can find, as heading north this weekend for our annual winter week. Fingers crossed that this coming cold spell firms up what snow it about!

Keep those reports coming folks!

Did Buachille etive Beag today in Glen Coe. The snow is PERFECT (also is the weather!) Nice and crunchy. A bit softer in the late afternoon.

You picked the right time...the conditions have been tremendous. I have not done a walk report for years but I am going to do one for my walk from Wednesday.

In the meantime, here is a panorama taken from Ben Starav the day before.

Agreed. We scampered all over Scottish hills last weekend :D Snow has consolidated and it's very hard now, especially in the morning, after frosty night. On Sunday we had to use crampons on steeper sections on Druim Fada (the Glen Loy one)... I'll drop my TR's on the forum later this week. For now, wee pano from the western top of Druim Fada, west to Glenfinnian and Moydart hills:

Date: 25/02/18
Location: Stob a' Choin (Loch Voil)
Snow level: 500m
Snow cover: Generally good, but with some rocky/grassy patches showing through at all levels
Conditions: Brick hard neve in the shade, soft surface on sunward slopes
Comments: Crampons useful even on moderate slopes. Good mountaineering skills required on steeper terrain.

Date: 10-3-'18
Location: Ben Hope and Meallan Liath (the 601m job between Ben Hope and Ben Loyal, not the other one with the longer name. 8) )
Snow level: 300m.

Ground from 10-300m frozen at 7:30 but back to squelchy by 17:00.

Snow cover complete apart from boulders and crags, hard enough to walk on above about 500m in sheltered areas but more like 650 on the east side of Ben Hope. (I only tried the east side of Hope.) Below that it was soft with footprints 20cm+ and some deep drifts. Crampons a definite advantage, and I'm tempted to buy some snowshoes and go back for a blast on the gentler slopes. Lochs at 400m were frozen over.

There's a walk report on the way.
