Walking websites for Ireland

Walking websites for Ireland

Postby brocoli » Thu Jan 11, 2018 6:01 pm

Hello all,
I really like walkhighlands, it showed me many beautiful places in Scotland. Now I'm wondering if there is any comparable site about walking in Ireland; does anyone know anything about this? I already found some walking websites but they aren't even close to the walkhighlands standards (which are outstanding).

If there is none, plan b will be going to Scotland instead :D

Greetings from Germany
Yannick

I'm not aware of anything online that is remotely comparable to Walkhighlands. There is a decent series of guidebooks however: https://www.collinspress.ie/walking-guides/

We found enough in https://www.collinspress.ie/irelands-best-walks.html to keep us busy for 2 weeks (one in Connemara, one in Kerry, which are probably the most attractive destinations for hillwalking).

Thanks for the link, I'll look into it. I forgot to mention that I'm planning to go to Kerry, it seems quite nice on the map :)
Maybe walkhighlands should expand to walkireland, what about that? ;)

Kerry is beautiful. The Reeks (split into 2 days) and Brandon are outstanding hill walks (with some scrambling), and there is plenty else to do in the area, though the less popular hills tend to be a bit rough and pathless!

Irish Mountain views is a very good website with details on most hills and a lively discussion theme. https://mountainviews.ie My favourite walking is in Mayo and Galway - you'll go far to find the compact heaven that is the 12 Pins.

Seems to be a lack of dedicated mountain forecast sites, but the guide we had swore by metcheck for the Reeks.

Short answer: no!

Other options are:
Mountain Forecast e.g. https://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Carrauntoohil/forecasts/1038
the regional forecast from Met Eireann http://www.met.ie/forecasts/regional.asp?Prov=Munster
and yr.no e.g. https://www.yr.no/place/Ireland/Munster/Killarney/

You can also try watching the BBC weather forecasts and hope that the presenter doesn't stand in front of that bit of the map!

Very glad you enjoyed your trip to Ireland, the photos are great. Donegal is well worth a visit. Mountainviews.ie can be useful though quite different from walkhighlands

Sadly locked out of Mountain Views, as I have forgotten my user name, let alone password. Its in there because I have logged lots of hills, but I cannot see the logs.

I remember it is an excellent site.

Agree Mountain Views is probably the best site although not as good as WalkHighlands. Done quite a few of the hills in Eire, from Hungry Hill down on the Iveragh Peninsula up to the Twelve Bens or Pins and Mweelrea in Mayo. Reminds me of the West coast of Scotland a lot, including the midges :( . Lot of the hills might not be as high but there's a lot of good walking to be done. Loved your pics :D :D
