Circular Cairngorms route

Circular Cairngorms route

Postby jezzer000 » Mon Feb 19, 2018 2:40 pm

Hi guys, does anyone know of a 70-80 mile circular route around the cairngorms?
Ideally starting and ending at Aviemore, wild camping and avoiding civilisation where possible.

At the moment I'm planning on buying the os explorer maps and working it out as I go but any tips would be welcome.

One option is the Lairig an Laoigh to Derry lodge and Glen Lui. Then Linn of Dee to White Bridge, Geldie burn to Glen Feshie. From Feshie head to Monadh Mor, take in a few tops in that area. Either back to Aviemore along the Lairig Ghru or Gleann Eanaich. This is less than the distance you want but if you add in a few tops will easily get to that mileage.
You could add in a walk from Braemar to Lochnagar but there is so much round Cairn Toul you don't need to. Also an option for a night at Shelterstone.

You're really spoilt for choice to be honest, just a quick look at the map and I've came up with:

Aviemore > Glen Feshie > White Bridge > Linn of Dee > Glen Quoich > Beinn a'Bhuird > Glen Avon > Fords of Avon > Shelter Stone > Hutchinson Hut > Glen Derry > Lairig Ghru > Coylumbridge > Aviemore.

Once deep into Glen Feshie you won't see many people until you reach Linn of Dee. Glen Avon is quiet too. Lairig Ghru can be busier but you could head up Strath Nethy instead. Loads of options.

Lairig Ghru can be busy but to put it in context you might see 12 people and that's usually when DoE students are going about!! Derry Lodge can get busy as well but it's very easy to get away from everyone. But agree, really spoiled for choice.
Are you packing all your food or do you intend to resupply?

Should have qualified the comment.
Shortage of water isn't an issue!!
That was a bad flood. One of my friends got a shout from his son to come and see the news as his caravan was going down the Dee! He had recognised his canoe on the side of the van.
