silly question, but inexperienced here

silly question, but inexperienced here

Postby cnbcnb » Mon Feb 19, 2018 10:38 pm

Hello!
I've been preparing for my walking in Scotland next summer on Skye. I have a question I feel a little silly asking, but it's essential for planning. When the time estimations are given for walks, is that round trip or one way?

Thanks so much. Appreciate this forum and the friendly people here.

But I can't help feeling they should add a few hours for standing gasping, panting, sweating and flopping down into the heather and declaring oneself dead.

The Cicerone guidebooks are always quite specific about what they don't include in the times, although I don't think they list playing dead!

Ha ha I often add an hour onto the suggested route timings from this site for those very activities :-)

We used to use the Naismith formula: an hour for every three miles and an hour for every 2000 feet of ascent. On reasonable ground we always used to beat Naismith. In places like Skye we ignored him. Then in our middle years we strolled along in friendly manner with Naismith for a long while. Unaccountably, he has started walking much faster than us and is sitting looking at his watch back at the car and sighing.

Yes Sgurr, and when he's not at your car waiting, he's there at mine - such an impatient chap!
