A87 to Loch Quoitch dam

A87 to Loch Quoitch dam

Postby Coop » Fri Feb 23, 2018 8:51 pm

Anyone been along the track/ road recently to the dam. Is it drivable? I was thinking of heading up Gairich maybe Wednesday or Thursday. (The corbett Garbh Bheinn will be a back up).
Cheers

Hello,
You leave behind the A87 at the Tomdoun turn-off to reach Loch Quoich....I don't think that the road thereafter carries any B label?
It has been a very snowy winter up there but the snow at the road level should be clear now.....my daughter has been working near to the dam all winter and recently we have not received any images of snow on the road.
Is it maybe Buidhe Bheinn?, access from the end of the road at Kinlochhourn, that you are thinking of as your alternative?
A road for careful driving.

Cheers gaffr . Its the tomdoun road I'll be going along to the dam.

My back up was - not going that far; and doing the Corbett Garbh Beinn just outside Glencoe

It was okay this past week - but snow is forecast for the area this coming week so it might not be clear come Wed/Thurs.

Snow level seems to be above 400 metres.....last Friday Mel had a ski up to Spidean Mialach from behind Kingie and a descent into the big Coire with Loch an Fearna.....good snow conditions.

Hello,
My final one of the Munros was the upgraded Sgurr na Carnach of the Glen Sheil range in 1999. I missed out on including Ben Lomond when coming onto the Forum here. Have only once been to Lomond in the early 1970's on a dour December day....never have been back there. This at a time when memories are stirred by the inquiry in another related Post to the Forum.
As for any sort of party etc. I was with Wilfred my canine companion on many of the Scottish hills. :) Party's are for others to enjoy. It was a grand day out at the time of a significant eclipse of the sun when slogging the way up to Sgurr na Ciste Dubh. The wee dog just curled up in the vegetation prepared for a sleep when the light faded. After reaching Sgurr Fhuaran we descended from the col between Fhuaran and Carnach to reach the road on a bit of terrain that I had passed many times heading to other hills.....just wondered if it could be descended. :)

Didn't even contemplate trying to get out the street today. It'll be there another day.

Stay safe if you're out folks.

The irony is that its not snowed there so the road is probably fine.

Yes, this morning starting at 0600 hrs., Mel travelled by road from Quioch to Badenoch. It appears that there was just a bit of snow at the Slocht.

Yes, the roads in the west seemed surprisingly clear - I was up Moruisg today and looking West to Torridon, the area was positively sunny! Not sure if the Quoich road would have been similarly blessed, but looked like it had a decent chance ...

How was the snow in that area ? Has there been much snow coverage from the storm which has mainly battered the east of the country ? Cheers

My camera wouldn't work in the sub-zero temp at the summit, but this is the view of Moruisg from the parking layby. Freezing cold and very windy, but not too bad in terms of actual snow!

I was in the area this weekend. Apart from the wind and variable cloud cover walking conditions are as good as they get.
Every thing is frozen from bog level up to the summits. It’s possibly quicker than summer in places with crampons.
All change though but unless it dumps down could still be good.
