Longest distance covered in a single day hillwalk?

You made me think :problem: :problem:
The most ascent was around 1800m, quite a few walks: Loch Mullardoch Munros, Cairn Toul-Devils Point traverse from Feshie, The 5 Sisters, Glen Affric Munros, Derry Cairngorm-McDhui-Mheadhoin round...
Distance-wise it's hard to tell, we use bikes when possible, but the longest walked routes were about 35km long.

My knees are not as good as they used to be, so I'm trying to be careful these days and save them from too much ascent/distance when possible.

Good question. My longest to date I think was the Ullswater Watershed, which I've done twice now. 38 miles, about 3000 metres ascent. Took me 18 hours on both occasions (I'm not a runner).

About 42 km /2600m, Ennerdale Horseshoe.

Lots of 30km + days in Scotland, usual suspects, Fannichs,Avon etc. Used camping and bothers more though.

When young...long kms over challenging terrain.

Now older...shorter kms over challenging terrain.
I look & observe the little things, take photos, sketch, swim, abseil, rock hop more nowadays... 8)
Short & sweet trips around 15kms.

With the help of a bike, probably the four corbetts south of Glen Feshie at 65km and 2,300m

By foot only, some different mixes of distance and height incl:
- Mamores M10 at 41km and 3,900m
- Gairich to Sgurr na Ciche from Loch Arkaig M5 C1 at 44.5km and 3,170m
- Glen Lednock loop M1 C3 G1 at 44km and 2,600m
as well as some long Donalds' days

Nowadays I tend to go for shorter routes with longer routes generally involving an overnight camp - cheers :)

Looking back through my diary, I have 49km/4060m ascent for doing all of the Welsh 3000ers in a day (going north to south), in 18 hours. Mind you, I was 15 and fit then - haven't done anything nearly as long since!

Most of my longer day walks these days tend to top out around 32km/2500m of ascent, which is within my comfort zone. I keep intending to leave it and push for some really long days, but there always seems to be another day for that...

Some efficient munro bagging days I can recommend and haven't seen mentioned already. I always try to be able to go hiking the following day, so nothing extra long. And hurray for public transport.

4 summit hike from Dalmally to Tyndrum
Grey corries 4 from Corrour to Fort William

And for those on the CWT and don't mind >40km and lugging a full pack over some munros: Start at Schoolhouse bothy and hike over Ben More Assynt via south ridge, Conival down to Inchnadamph. :D

Rockhopper, I've been seriously eyeing up your Arkaig epic for later this year.

23 miles (37k) in July 2016.

I left the Sugar Bowl car park at 7am; through the Chalamain Gap; down the Lairig Ghru as far as the bothy; bagged Devils Point, Cairn Toul, Angels Peak and Braeriach; back through the Gap, and returned to the Sugar Bowl at 8.30pm.

One of my most enjoyable days out on the hills.

51.4km I think is our longest so far.

That was starting from Glen Affric, and then a wee tour of the 3 Munros behind Altbeithe Hostel and a lot of Munro Tops. 27.2km on the bikes and 23.8km walking with about 2500m of up/down.

59km and 3000m of ascent as part of the Brecon Beacons 10 peaks challenge - SHORT course.
We were surrounded by skinny fell-runners, but we had on our usual walking gear and heavy packs.
It took us 17h.
We added on a couple of extra tops not on the official route and went a little astray in the dark at the end so our route was a bit longer than the 'official' one.
we weren't quite last....
Awesome day out.
Would highly recommend!!

I sort of have two categories for distance covered ie one is a backpacking distance which generally covers a lot of km's but less altitude whereas hillwalking day's out are shorter but steeper......that said both are getting significantly less as my knees wear out faster than my enthusiasm

Not a hill walk at all, but in March 1963, along with 5 school pals (I was just 18 at the time) I walked from Sherborne to Exeter overnight down the A30, a distance of 52 miles in about 16 hours. We did not prepare or train for this walk and I was the only one to complete. I was reasonably fit at the time through cross country running. This was a long time before Hi-Vis clothing was available and the roads were very quiet. The walk was inspired by the exploits of (Doctor) Barbara Moore who, despite the name, was a rather eccentric Russian lady who became a media celebrity by walking long distances e.g. John o'Groats to Land's End and across America, as well as her health beliefs - she was a vegetarian, long before it became common, and a breatharian, as well as believing she could live to 200 and have a baby when she was 100.

These days my exploits are much more limited, but 3 years ago did walk Beinn a' Bhuird from Linn of Quoich, 28km, and seemed to have settled on about 20km as a reasonable day in the hills.
