What's your oldest piece of kit?

Purple Karrimor Alipiniste 65lt rucsack and a pink and grey Jack Wolfskin balaclava - circa 1992 when I started university.

Last year, DofE chasing time, and there it is.

A woolly hat/blaclava from sometime in the 80's (they were all the rage then), and a seemingly indestructible ultrafleece jacket (from Hilltrek in Aboyne) c1991 - both still get an occasional outing on the hill. A 1994 Lowe Alpine Crag 30 daysack still in fairly regular use for local walks and travelling. Not long got rid of - to Mrs Rab's great delight - a Field &Trek fibre pile jacket from the 80's I still wore around the house and garden. Mind you, one of my regular hill buddies, now aged seventy plus, is still using a daysack he bought in his twenties - he never saw the point in buying another one.

My Karrimor 30l rucksack dates from 1993 and is in regular use. I got it embroidered in Kathmandu in 2001 and would be reluctant to part with it. It does have a dry bag liner though!

I think my Mountain equipment ultra fleece hooded top is even older. Curiously the wash instructions are still perfectly legible after all these years - I wish modern garments were the same.

I haven't used the sleeping bag and tent (which date from 1981) for a while though.

I'm only 32 so the 14 year old waterproof I wear is comparatively old for me!

I do have a rucksack which I don't use any more given to me when I was 4 one Christmas. Funnily enough I burst out crying when I got it (was soon pacified by some Lego)! Little did I know it would be my sort of thing in the future :)

Gosh! I am amazed that so many people have got old compasses.   Mine only seem to last 2-3 years before they get a bubble, though, to be fair, they always get a lot of use. And yes, they have all been good quality Silva compasses. What's the secret of keeping them so long?

Otherwise, I think my steel thermos flask, a Patagonia fleece (bought in a sale) and my whistle might be the oldest things still in use (1988), although I have probably got an ancient smelly helly from 1974 or so.

I've quite a lot from last century but this 1976 map's the oldest in regular use. Look at the price. I've some series 1 maps but they've a 16 metre contour interval (converted 50 feet) and that's too confusing to work with. On this one the A9 is still running through Blair Atholl but I can cope...

I recently read The Last Hillwalker by John Burns, where he and a mate were using an old map and discovered that a reservoir had been built right across their route. We have discovered that with windfarms, but at least you can walk through them.

A Berghaus L/BC 55L rucksack... circa1984. Bought when I was a student. I took it Inter-railing with me in the mid 80s, and a couple of cross-USA road trips in the early 90s.

It mostly gathers dust in the cupboard now, but it occasionally gets an outing when my kids use my better, more modern, rucksacks.

I didn't know when I bought it, but the 'L' stands for Ladies model. The sneaky bar-steward in Tisos in Aberdeen didn't tell me at the time.

Just found out today while having coffee out of it on Beinn Tarsuin,Arran that our metal Aladdin Adventure flask was 21 years old today, the date is stamped on it,a few bashes on it but still keeps the coffee warm in the worst weather.

A bit late to the party, but my oldest bit of kit is my North Face firefly tent. It was given to me as a christmas present when I was about 7 I think. So that makes it 25 years old now! Just had it out this week and it is still performing nicely, although the ground sheet lets water through if you stand or kneel on it in one place for any length of time. Deciding weather its worth getting a new groundsheet sewn in as we didn't get wet at all whilst sleeping.
