2018 Midge & tick watch

They survive in the frozen ground, in suspended animation, to rise and torment the world again when Beelzebub himself ordains it thus. The terrible winters about ten years ago had no effect on them, despite it being well below zero for months on end.The only thing that affects them seems to be drought. In the long hot summers of 1976 and '77 the highlands were almost devoid of midgies, as their breeding waters had dried up. Unfortunately they resurrected themselves quickly. We need to genetically modify trout by cross-breeding them with flying fish so the trout can fly through the air and eat the little buggers on the wing. Imagine Rannoch Moor covered with flocks of flying trout flapping around with their mouths open, sieving midgies out of the air like basking sharks sieving plankton. It would be like those flocks of birds over the Wash, murmurating and swarming all over the place. It is our only hope.

At last, some sense in a mad, mad world.

Though the worst midges I can actually remember were wild camping on Rannoch Moor in 1976, so I'm not 100% sure the drought thing is enough to rid us of of the menace, as presumably the fish won't be that fond of droughts either.

As for the ticks, I'm wondering if we all spend, say, five years completely and paralytically drunk, and include the deer in the party, they'll all die of alcohol poisoning?

Found a tick in my armpit at bynack lodge (southern caingorms) last week.

As for cleggs. A great training tool for me when I us d to wild run on the isle of Skye. They were the only thing stopping me from taking a rest.

Spawn of the pits of mordor so they are.

I've been experimenting with this for years, it doesn't seem to be working. However, best not stop now, must persevere.

Couple of days over on Rum at the weekend. 2 ticks seen, both before they'd started sooking. One fully mature, one a tiny juvenile.

No midgies though.

I was in the southern Cairngorms at the weekend and picked up a tick as my travelling buddy, probably on Sgòr Mòr.

Plenty of midges appeared out of nowhere on the top of Crag Leacach and some were even biting on Saturday. Bastard things. Seems they are out a little early this year?

Took a tick off one of our dogs back in March and two off last week, after trips near Glencoe.

Jen has pulled over 20 ticks out of me today. I've pulled 2 out of her. Also brushed a few off before they burrowed. We were camping in Arrochar Alps. Little sods just love me, as do leeches, midges and mosquitoes.

Just had the intimate examination. Found 2 more in my scrotum    and 1 more on Jen.

I bloody detest the little critters. I'm covered in big, red angry spots. Thankfully no halo.

That's the great thing about the internet. You can have an honest rant. Just found another little sod in a wrinkle about 1mm from my eye. Getting close to 30 removed from me now. I'm now suffering from the rational kind of paranoia. Stripping every time I get an itch. This could prove to be problematic as I'm heading to my mothers to fix her laptop. :D

Jon it might be worth trying a broad band of Smidge on your wrists and ankles. And keep your trousers tucked into your socks. Nothing is foolproof but it might reduce the attack rate a bit.

Camping in Glen Nevis just now and the midges are out in enough numbers to make it annoying.
