2019 JOGLE

2019 JOGLE

Postby Billbobaggins » Thu May 17, 2018 8:58 am

I was wondering whether any of the good folk who frequent WH have any experience walking either a JOGLE or LEJOG? It something that has been in the back of mind for the past few years and won’t go away! I have been fortunate enough to negotiate a couple of months off work next year and was planning to start mid to late May 2019.

I am hoping to camp as much as possible particularly in Scotland to reduce costs. My current pack weight including tent, sleeping gear etc is around 10kg which I’m worrying is a little high. Although I have a route in mind in Scotland, incorporating the GGW and WHW, England and Wales is a little trickier. I would anticipate around 20 miles a day which I appreciate is going to be a tough ask.

Any thoughts, ideas... apart from don’t do it, would be appreciated.

You should have a look at Dan Scheer's series of reports of walking from Aberdeen to Luxembourg - although it isn't the same, you could probably follow a similar route through the north and middle of England, before picking up the SW coast path to the bottom.

Mark Moxon's website has a lot of useful info.
But if you put Lejog walking into your search engine you should come up with a few blogs which should give you ideas for routes.

Not walked it. Cycled it many years ago. You think you will commune with nature, but you end up communing with a demanding peripatetic stomach, so if you don't want to add to your load, make sure you factor in pubs, hotels and village shops. We met a guy in the Ben Dronaig bothy once who was attempting to run it, and his biggest regret was not working out a route via food stops: he was over-reliant on petrol stations which were often nearer to the places he crossed roads and that sort of food is not the best fuel.

Thanks all for replying... I’ve managed to find some interesting blogs including one with a similar route which will hopefully incorporate a ‘three peaks challenge’ by joining up Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon. Hopefully it will all come together!
Ps... Sgurr I’m hoping to factor in many pubs to lighten the load!!

There's a book called 'Up the Country' by Peter Jackson which describes a LEJoG which includes the 3 peaks.

Bilbo

On the walkingforum, there is mananddog who I know has completed the LEJOG and also have a look at the Alan Sloman blog, he has completed it and I'm sure has commented about being contacted by others requiring information.

I finished my LEJOG on 21 May 2019 after 77 days - left LE on 6 Mar. I was a bit shy of 1300 miles total mileage which worked out at about 17miles per day with 3 rest days. I carried full camping except for first and last 10 days when my wife followed me in a van. I found little difference in mileage with a full pack to be honest - it just took me longer. With such long days at this time of year you should have no issue with getting the miles in provided your body holds up long term ie you eat hydrate and sleep properly. I did 3 peaks of Snowdon, Scafell and Ben Nevis as part of the walk and ironically the 3 days I did them were almost rest days due to the small mileages on those days. If I was to do this again I would do it maybe 2 weeks later do camp sites are open and I still avoid midge season. Good luck btw.

I think there is a way to connect the WHW with the Pennine way using bits of other long distance paths. The Pennine Way will get you down to Derbyshire, I'm not sure there is another convenient LDP from there to get you further south.
