Favourite walks near Edinburgh?

Favourite walks near Edinburgh?

Hi all!

(First time posting!)

What are you favourite walks near(ish) Edinburgh? We've just come back from a week touring a couple of the islands so we're not up for driving too far. Probably 60-90 mins.

Generally, we like any circuit route with a nice view!

Thanks!

A favourite after work stroll is to go to Straiton and do a loop over hillend, caerketton & Allermuir.

A bit longer is to park at NT210608 and do a circuit of Scald Law & the Kips with arguably the only proper pointy hill in the range? A small amount of walking a long the road at the end (pavement) or you can take a higher traverse following the fence line between the quarries.

From both on a clear day you can see quite a few munros including into the cairngorms.

I prefer the Kips and Scald Law from Bavelaw at NT166639; and I prefer it clockwise - it seems less of an effort that way. Big car park (but get there early) and very little road walking.

We used our bus passes to get a bus to the end of the water of Leith walk. Really enjoyed coming in from Fife and doing it.

Apart from that, come to Fife, we have seven Marilyns which you can do one at a time, or all in one day if you can drive between them

Or bits of the Fife Coastal Path. The ones beyond Kirkcaldy are probably best, particularly the bits including the fishing villages. You can leave do most by bus or train, or leave your car at one village catch a bus to the next, or the one beyond and walk back.

Eildon - from the bus I go up from Newton St Boswells and down to Melrose, but you can start from Melrose perfectly well.

Dun Rig from Peebles - actually most kinds of prowling from Peebles.

Various chunks of the Borders Abbeys Way - good for getting buses back to where you started.

Not sure if St Abbs Head is within your limits, but it's nice!

Lots of options in the Pentlands as already described. You can use buses to do some good traverses, e.g. Carlops to Flotterstone or Hillend to Balerno. The further south you go, the less frequented the hills are: https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/lothian/east-cairn-hill.shtml is good if you don't mind a bit of pathless stuff.

Further afield I can recommend the Dun Rig round from Peebles (noted above, https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/borders/dun-rig.shtml ), West Lomond https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/fife-stirling/west-lomond-bunnet.shtml which can be extended to include Bishop Hill, and Ben Cleuch in the Ochils https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/fife-stirling/ben-cleuch.shtml

90 minutes will just about get you to the edge of the Highlands for Ben Ledi https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/lochlomond/ben-ledi.shtml or Ben Venue https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/lochlomond/ledard.shtml
