40 Years Tea-total

40 Years Tea-total

Postby homerbarry » Sun Sep 16, 2018 10:09 am

In 1984 I did my first Munro, Ben Nevis. This October I plan to compleat on Ben na Lap with friends and family :D I have been tea-total for 40 years but plan to celebrate with a 'wee dram' at the top. Being completely ignorant can someone suggest a suitable whisky for this auspicious occasion. Many thanks.

If you've not had a dram for a while, the Islay/Skye whiskies, though in my opinion the best in the world, may be a little full on. Jura Superstition is a fine alternative, with much of the character of the other island malts, but a little less drastic on unsuspecting taste buds.

If you're happy to go for the Islay experience, Laphroaig Quarter Cask is simply fabulous, though becoming less easy to get hold of. The Select is a decent enough alternative.

I would start with something easy like a Highland for a first dram in decades.

Dalwhinnie is a pretty easy drink, affordable, you can get it in tesco and the distillery is less than 20 miles from Beinn na Lap so you can see it (well, the general area) when you are there.

My shout for the greatest whisky under 100 is Springbank 12 yo CS which you can still get here and there, including at the Green Welly last time i looked. Should set you back about 60. However, if you have been aff it 40 years it might all just taste like fire.

Talisker 57 N is also outstanding under 100 but same as above.

I have just been to a Full House completion where champagne was carted up to the summit. It doesn't HAVE to be whisky. Congratulations to Anne Butler for her Munros, Tops, Corbetts, Donalds,Furths and yesterday, the final Graham: Fiarach. Ben na Lap, an excellent choice for a Munro completion. Congratulaions in advance

Why not get something from 1984. Port, wine or whisky. Good luck.

Cap doffed. Must have been a great feeling.
I'll hopefully be doing something similar in 2 or 3 years time ( maybe a Royal Salute)

All the best for your future hills
