easy munros

easy munros

Postby Runci21 » Fri Sep 21, 2018 5:48 pm

took the wife up her first 3 munros yesterday, did carn aosda, carn a gheoidh and the cairnwell.

she has had both knees replaced and a shoulder reconstruction so having a high starting point makes it easier for her and trying to avoid steps.

any suggestions welcome

There is an official WH recommendation on the 10 easier Munros here

www.walkhighlands.co.uk/news/our-pick-10-of-the-easier-munros/0013233/

I would go for Beinn na Lap, just because it is fun doing the train ride in and out, and being on Rannoch Moor it starts quite high, as does the Tarmachan Ridge

Husband took the 3 kids of a US friend up (1) Tarmachan (2) Dreish and Mayar (3) The ones you did, when each became 10. so are quite easy. Husband has rubbish knees but hasn't yet gone for a replacement. How long before she could get up hills after the op ?

The hills around Drumochter also benefit from high starting points, though not quite to the same extent as the Cairnwell three.

Then there are the east side of the Cairnwell - it may be easier to do some of those out-and-back, or with other arrangements, since the traditional bagging routes tend to add steeper sections in order to make circuits.

Then there's Cairngorm (from the ski centre) and Geal Charn (in the Monadhliath), or Meall Buidhe from Glen Lyon. Though Stuchd an Lochain (also Glen Lyon) oposite has a steep ascent/descent by the usual path, despite a high start.

Depending whether distance and gradual ascents are OK, there are a number of Munros with (relatively) longer but gentle ascents.
And, of course, there is plenty of good walking on lower hills (though I tend to feel a shock at the start of every summer when "warming up" on something modestly sized in the Borders or Highland fringe!)

Ben Lawers from the visitor centre which is high up.

Meall an Bhuiridh, upper Glen Coe. You can start from the ski centre over 350m asl or, even easier, get the ski-lift up to about 680m.

Carn Ban Mor from the car park at the end of the Glen Feshie road, another 300m+ starting point, a good path to the summit, and from the summit it is an easy walk to Sgor Gaoith from where the views are superb.

Carn Dearg and Sgor Gaibhre from Loch Ossian, although I'm not sure how easy the terrain is underfoot.

I had no idea. What happened there? Is there anything in its place?

Big car park on the other side of the road. Story behind demolishment is here -

Still possible then to park where the visitor centre used to be and climb Ben Lawers from the same high starting point.

Another easy-ish Munro (in terms of limited vertical ascent) is Aonach Mor from the top gondola station, From memory of my last visit many years ago, the terrain underfoot doesn't look that difficult, but I have never tried getting to the summit.

I've just posted re knee replacements in another thread, these are my thoughts on other easy munros with higher starting points. All of these are interesting hills with great views
- stob dubh - https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=76100
- meall a'bhuiridh using the ski lift
- an caisteal (without beinn a'chroin) - not a really high start point, but a well-graded route with a nice ridge. A couple of small rocky steps near the top, very easy if dry but perhaps avoid in the wet - https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=80675
- use the beautiful Coire Ardair path, go to the lochan then up to the Window, but instead of going to Creag Meagaidh, turn right at the top of the Window a short distance to the summit of Stob Coire Poite Ardair and return by same route - https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=81131
Cruach Ardrain (without Beinn Tulaichean) from Crianlarich - using same start point as for An Caisteal - https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=81151

Mealle Buidhe (Glen Lyon) is straightforward and a fairly short easy ascent.

Stuchd an Lochan on the other side has a steep bit but is otherwise straightforward and shortish too. Both in the same day with lunch inbetween is quite doable.

Don't rule out Corbetts and Grahams. The Walkhighlands route descriptions are excellent giving you total ascent, distance and difficulty rating.

Not sure if my eyes are deceiving me but is there not only 9 options on that list? Granted there are 12 munros
