Sgurr-a-Bhuic to Sgurr Choinnich Beag

Sgurr-a-Bhuic to Sgurr Choinnich Beag

Postby hotfezz » Sat Sep 22, 2018 10:09 pm

Hi all,

I'm looking to get into some of the Munroes next summer. As part of that I'm looking at Aonach Beag to Sgurr Choinnich Beag, but the map suggests the descent between Sgurr-a-Bhuic to Sgurr Choinnich Beag is seriously steep (NN211 706). Is it manageable? A scramble?

Thanks in advance!

From memory its straightforward going the other direction as you can see where to aim for. It looked like it'd be trickier to locate the other direction. I don't recall any scrambling just some "don't slip" terrain.

Edit: Looking back at some photos and I think we went from Sgurr Choinnich Beag to Sgurr-a-Bhuic by cutting under the east face of Sgurr-a-Bhuic and then up its east ridge.

This was the route my friend and i took going UP that section,as previously posted its not somewhere you want to take a fall, but its achievable, although id definitely prefer to ascend it than to descend it.

According to Dan Bailey's Great Mountain Days book https://books.google.co.uk/books?isbn=1849655006 there are two options, that posted above by johnnyaztec via the col at NN205704 and a more direct route from Stob Coire Bhealaich starting at about NN207708 down a slight ridge. The former is described as being more straightforward and would almost certainly be easier to locate in poor visibility.
