Where to find historical weather data?

Where to find historical weather data?

Postby Jon and Jen » Thu Dec 06, 2018 8:16 am

I'm trying to find the temperature and wind speed on Morven yesterday afternoon and Loch Muick temps the night before?

Jen and I were out testing our new winter gear but forgot to take a thermometer, we spent a cold night in Glas Allt Shiel bothy and a cold few hours up Morven. The car was showing -3c at 5pm on Tuesday and again at 11.30am on Wednesday. There was a lot of ice on the roads so I believe this temp was close enough and the BBC is reporting that temps were extreme, just looking to find real data to decide whether we have a case to return our new 4 season sleeping bags or not.

https://www.weatheronline.co.uk/ has a lot of data, though it is not the easiest site to navigate. Try using the "Worldwide weather ranking" box on the front page: once you have the current table, you can then select the time and date.

http://www.weathercast.co.uk/world-weather/weather-stations.html also has some recent data. Coverage on the Met Office site is sparse for northern Scotland: https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/observation/map/

Mountain weather data is pretty sparse - only 4-5 sites in Scotland record this. Nearest sites to Morven are Cairngorm and The Cairnwell: the latter is probably more representative as Cairngorm is a fair bit higher. Nearest low-level sites to Loch Muick are Aboyne, Balmoral and Braemar, but be aware that overnight minimum temps can vary a lot over short distances.

The wee bit half way down allows you to type in and search for previous 24 hours ( might be of use to you)

Bear in mind that for any location you enter, it will bring up the nearest locations which have weather stations if a station doesn't exist at your location of interest.
