Snow cover

Snow cover

Postby abs70 » Sun Mar 24, 2019 8:16 pm

A possibly quick question.

I'm heading up to the hills next weekend and - unseasonably warm weather permitting - are there any munros with any proper snow cover at the moment?

Cheers in advance.

Chek the sais blogs https://www.sais.gov.uk, they visit all the likely areas. And the webcams on winterhighland.

I was in Glen Nevis and Glen Coe a couple of days ago, there was snow down to a fairly low level. The weather is very changeable right now, and severe conditions are still likely. Are you hoping for such or wanting to avoid such conditions?

There are various webcams linked from MWIS, too - not sure if they're the same ones. Although for pretty view purposes I like the Ben More one, which isn't.

There doesn't seem to be much continuous cover anywhere, and any fresh stuff is likely to thaw by mid-week. Your best bet would probably to go high and west, i.e. Lochaber.

Ben More and Stob Binnein had noticeably more than the western coastal hills yesterday, which had barely any. I wouldnt holdout much hope of digging a crampon in though.

Aonach Mor is usually white, with the advantage of catching the ski gondola up, cutting out two thousand feet of gasping, panting, sweating and falling over. They even have a map of winter climbs on the cliffs to the North/N.East of the top station. https://www.nevisrange.co.uk/

Good cover on the E face, patchy on the summit plateau: http://lochaberblog.sais.gov.uk/2019/03/dusting-of-fresh-2/

I've just got back from Arrochar and there's a fair few patches on the sheltered sides - especially Ben Ime.

And all quite manageable without crampons. But the wind last week though... whew!!
