Favourite Sub-2000s

Favourite Sub-2000s

Postby NickyRannoch » Tue Apr 02, 2019 7:35 pm

Not "the" sub - 2000s but any lump, bump or cnoc under 2000ft

Inspired by the article on the site what's everybody elses favourites? https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/news/our-pick-scotlands-best-wee-hills/0012528/

Dundee Law has amazing views up and down the Tay and you can easily pick out the Cairngorm and Perthsire munros on a decent day. You are less than 10 minutes walk from summit to a pint too.

Deuchray Hill near Dunkeld. Loads of great walking and routes around Loch Ordie. This is a really complex wee rocky thing that opens up to the whole of Strathtay once on top.

Kinnoull Hill. Views up the Tay like something from the Rhine

My favourite so far is on the WH list - Beinn Tianavaig

A few other goodies:

Ben Shieldaig
Sgaoth Aird (Harris) - lovely wee horseshoe route
Meall an Fheadain (near Achiltibuie) - tremendous views
Preshal Beg (Skye) - weird rock architecture
An Groban (Gairloch)
Mullach Mor (Holy Island)
Meall nam Meallan (Mellon Udrigle) - very short walk but terrific views

I've only done a handful of 'Subs' myself but Druim na h-Earba near Fort William has to be one of the best big reward for very little effort hills. Cracking views down Loch Linnhe.

I've been on the top of Conachair and it is a fantastic summit in a fantastic setting, but my favourite so far is the Sgurr on Eigg. Im not really into the hill lists or bagging, though I certainly see the attraction and do get dragged into it on occasion :D
In the sub 2000 category my goal is Boreray, I think it is going to be really difficult and expensive to achieve but doable. It's the ultimate goal for me alongside Ossians cave, but that's a different story.

Not done that many sub-2ks myself - from what I have done it would probably be between:

Cnoc Reamhar
Beinn Bheigier
Noss Head

But for me it's all about the weather, time of day, temperature, spectacle, view, approach, nature, company etc. so I've managed to really enjoy some particularly dull hills and not particularly enjoy well-regarded ones!

Beinn Lora, Benderloch, near Oban. Probably the best view to effort ratio I have experienced.

Two of mine are on the list already - Arthur's Seat and Eabhal.

Allermuir also has a very good view to effort-from-city-centre ratio.

Nothing could be finer ... and AFAIK it's not even on a list!

(Edit: now I see this was #1 in the article.)

I go along with a lot of jmarkb's choices, for the excellent reason than many have a sea view. However, omitted were Sgurr na Stri, Ben Hiant and Dun Caan and the Sgurr on Eigg is great too.And Cruach Scarba, though it's not so dramatic.

Dun I on Iona holds a special place in my heart, although that's more to do with fond memories of the day that I climbed it, rather than the hill itself.

We only climbed 40 Subs, but Sgurr na Stri was our favourite, miles in front of anything else. A few more crackers, not mentioned so far:
Ben Griam Mor and Ben Griam Beg (Sutherland)
Smean and Maiden Pap (often combined with Grahams Morven and Scaraben, also Sutherland)
Seana Mheallan, Beinn Shieldaig (both in Torridon)
Ben Tianavaig, MacLeods Tables (Skye)
Meall an Doirein near Poolewe

Also a local hill, not a Marylin but a great viewpoint: Cnoc a'Bhreacaich above Dingwall
