Route advice

Route advice

Postby maremalin » Sat Apr 13, 2019 9:07 pm

Hello,
I'm in the process of reviewing hiking routes for later this year.
I'd like some advice about Ben Nevis by the Carn Mor Dearg Arete https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/maps/map4_3fw.shtml
After reaching summit i really do not like the idea of going down via zig zags and thought about heading towards Carn Dearg instead to reach path towards CIC hut - see image with route sketch in red.
Has anyone here done that? Is it walk-able?

It's doable, but I wouldn't really recommend it: it's quite steep and covered in scree and boulders: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3071895

I'm sure some tried and ended up going down a gully at high velocity. Best stay far back from the edge. The snow cornices tend to stay through the summer months, hiding the drop under your feet until it is too late.

We have used a similar line in both summer and in winter to get down onto the Allt a'Mhuilinn path at the wee dam lower down. Good visibility on both occasions.

You might want to consider going anti-clockwise and starting up Ledge Route: if you avoid the loose and awkward lower section by traversing in from Coire na Ciste it doesn’t increase the overall difficulty too much.
