AN Teallach - Glas Tholl descent

AN Teallach - Glas Tholl descent

Postby Steve B » Tue Apr 30, 2019 9:57 am

Hi,
Planning on An Teallach in the next week or so and looking to drop down into Glas Tholl to save some distance on the road at the end of the day.
Does anybody have experience of this and any images to share?
Thanks,
Steve

I think that's a fairly standard way down with an obvious path.

Malcy,
Could not see on map or satellite if there was a path.
Sounds fine then.
Thanks for the response.

I didn't notice a path although that doesn't necessarily mean that one doesn't exist. I just trudged on down, it's steep but manageable. I remember once reaching the corrie floor it being very boggy from there pretty much all the way back but I picked a rainy day which would have exacerbated that particular problem. I also got lost at the last bit coming through the woods to Dundonnell and had to fight my way through the branches which wasn't much fun.

Hello,
Not been down into Glas Tholl….don't think there is a path in there?
The path up or down is Meall Gharb ….from the hotel. Always that path for a quick descent.
I recall once ascending by the Glas Mheall Mor after using the path for a bit....steep-ish bit of scrambling near to the base.

Maybe I think wrong then....I'd swear I went down that way on a path, but it was about 18 years ago and the weather was a bit rubbish. Maybe I remember incorrectly.

There is a path leading from the summit and goes down into Glas Tholl corrie and leads back to Corrie Halle.

I descended by this route, and it seemed like there was an obvious path (albeit partly blocked by an enormous snow drift).

There are some images in my WHR.

Thanks for all the responses and link to the reports.
These have helped considerably.
Look forward to this and hopefully a good day for it (a little better than Giant Stoneaters would be ideal)

Descended that way at end of May last year and found old snow at steepest part at top, which I could avoid, plus recently uncovered steep slippery muck, which I could not. I did not notice any path at the top of the corrie though a bit of one appeared further down.

I was very conscious that if I was to slip while descending the slippy muck then I would be sliding for a while and I would likely be injured. I picked my way down it very cautiously and did not slip. If I'd had an ice axe or even a walking pole to use for arrest then I would not have been so concerned.

There is an eroded path down, but the hardest bit is finding your way out of the rhododendron forest at the end of the walk.

Well thanks for that....I have obviously completely missed out on the Glas Tholl descent. :) Makes for a nice round trip and easier to regain the motor. However chasing through logbooks and found that in June 1985, with a school group, we ascended to the main Munro of An Teallach…then the only Munro at that time...we reached to the summit by way of the ridge of Glas Mheall Liath and then onto the traverse and down to Shenavall. A very fine trip this one was with all the Fisherfields with both Ben Dearg Mor and Beag on the menu. Later after a night at Lochivroan we went onto the Fannaichs for three of that group..
