Am Faochagach River Crossing

Am Faochagach River Crossing

Postby dazza4994 » Thu Aug 01, 2019 6:12 pm

Hello,

Does anybody know what the current conditions of the Abhainn a' Gharbhrain are? Is it in spate or easily crossable? I'm planning on heading up there this weekend.

Or just do the easterly approach from Black Bridge and Strathvaich which avoids this entirely.

You probably already know that there is a marker at the most sensible crossing point. This photo is over 2 years old.

Current level of nearby burn is about average: http://apps.sepa.org.uk/waterlevels/?sd=t&lc=368538
Looks mostly dry between now and the weekend, so doubt it will be a problem.

The stepping stones I thought were really pretty large. I got across fine after/during some pretty damp summer weather last year. That's at the marked bit just upstream, when you get to the river, you can see the erosion track leading upstream to it.

On return, also helps on return to stay close against the moraine humps - cutting a direct line across to the river early just takes you into mega-bog.

I had thought that and either cycle or drive to the lodge 1st. Not sure if you're able to drive up though?

Okay, so maybe similar conditions and it was okay for you! Cheers for the guidance!

Hi Bruce if your plans change for Saturday, I'll hopefully be on there maybe September 9th.

I passed on saturday and the water level in the loch and the river was low. But the level in that river can change a lot in just a day. Keep an eye on the rainfall.
All the best. :D

Will bear that in mind Alex, forecast not looking too good at the moment, but I'm up for the weekend, so may do on Friday or Monday if the weather's decent.

Was easy enough and a lot easier than it looks when you get there. I used walking sticks for a bit of extra stability / confidence but you don't really need them.
