Help planning for Swedish families

Help planning for Swedish families

Postby Hakan_Haglund » Tue Aug 06, 2019 9:49 pm

We are a family of about fuve (parentes + kids 18, 15 and 12 this year + boyfriend/girlfriend to kids) whi enjoy hiking/walking in the Swedish mountains with a family of about the same size.
We usually make day trips of 5-15km from a base (b&b, hostel, self service) an our trips usually are a week long. We try to make one over-night visit to another place, and return the next day.

We are now thinking about doing a trip to Scotland in summer 2020 and walking/hiking in the highlands. Since we have never done this before we need some help planning.

So where do I start? Wich forum would be the best? Is there anyone else out there who might have done the same? Wich would be a great part of Scotland to start?

This is just a beginning, and hopefully It Will become clearer....

Sincerely

Hello Hakan!

The "Walks" section of this website would be a good place to start. It shows all the different parts of Scotland, and some of the walks that can be done there. You can also see walk reports by users of this website by following the links.

What sort of place do you want to visit? Do you want to climb mountains, or just walk through valleys? I think a good place to start might be the Isle of Skye.

It has a good variety of spectacular scenery, which you can see by exploring the link above. There's also something special about walking on an island.

The Cairngorms are perhaps the most similar to Sweden - the tops of the mountains are sub-arctic and even support reindeer. If you don't want to climb mountains, the valleys below give very nice walking.

Have an explore of the Walks part of the website, see which places interest you, then come back and ask as many questions as you want!

Also, here's a recent thread you might find useful:

You are almost spoilt for choice but I guess making a list of what you would like to experience would be a start - eg coast, islands, cultural/historical and of course mountains and match them with your families abilities - they may not be Alps but many mountains here can be very challenging. Use the walk section on here.

The next aim is to get accommodation (camping/self catering etc etc) sorted and again there is a good site on Wlakhighlands.....a lot of good places do get booked pretty early.

Have a great time planning and there are shedloads (not sure if that will translate....) of experienced people on this site to help with specifics
