Looks like a thing for dispensing grit to the grouse. Birds need grit in there gizzards to grind down tough plant material. Suitable grit is not always naturally available, so some is provided for the grouse.

One side of the box has medicated grit....the other non medicated. Switched to the non side during the grouse eating season.

Yep, the medicated grit helps combat an intestinal parasite common among grouse and other game birds.

The toffs want healthy birds to shoot the beejesus out of when they and their landed gentry pals fancy a day of animal murder / carnage ...and charge £2k a day for the privilege.

All in the name of 'Sport' of course.

A good two-day shoot, Grouse then Partridge, is around £5500.

You can find cheaper day options at a few hundred quid.

Or you could just beat a pigeon to death for FREE at any major railway station.

Advisory: Neither Lightfoot nor Walkhighlands advocate or support in any way the beating to death of pigeons or any other wildlife.

It's an integral part of the intensification of driven grouse shooting in the UK and is increasingly common in Scotland.

Being a newbie (at posting) on WH I'm apparently not allowed to put helpful links in my post so I've had to try and provide a steer to where there is much more information and background on this wretched and destructive business.

If anyone wants to learn more of the reality of driven grouse shooting then a visit to the Raptor Persecution UK blog by Ruth Tingay is well worthwhile.

And once you've had your fill of the almost endless and ongoing legal and illegal destruction of nature and natural environments on that site you can go to this site and make a choice by looking at the UK government petitions site, in particular, petition 266770 created by Chris Packam

And for the hat-trick you could do worse than have a wee look at Revive, the coalition for grouse moor reform.
