Braeriach Cairn Toul Traverse - Coylumbridge/Glenmore/SugarB

Braeriach Cairn Toul Traverse - Coylumbridge/Glenmore/SugarB

Postby samanthaanne89 » Tue Aug 20, 2019 3:44 pm

Hi!

A group of us are planning to take on the Braeriach/Cairn Toul Traverse this weekend.
I've read about cycling from Coylumbridge instead, and have done that cycle into the Larig Ghru so know it's pretty alright and a viable option to avoid the Chalamain Gap and shortern the walk out with a cycle.
We're staying at Cairngorm Lodge - is the path similarly as good to cycle from there? (Instead of driving to Whitewell)

Thanks in advance!

Are you asking about the path between Coylumbridge and the junction at NH937075? If so, that's eminently cycleable. If you're asking about the path from Cairngorm Lodge, I might suggest doing the route via Rothiemurchus Lodge.

Yes apologies - asking about the route from Cairngorm Lodge.

How is the route via Rothiemurchus Lodge?

It's a vehicle-ready track up to the lodge, can't remember what it's like for the kilometer to the Lairig Ghru path after that. If you've cycled into the LG before you'll be fine I'm sure.

I walked that last part after Rothiemurchus Lodge about 2 months ago. I am not a cyclist, so don't want to say if it is good or bad. However, it had clearly been well cycled in few days prior to my walk. I would even say it is a planned track for cycling from Rothiemurchus Lodge as an activity, judging by the amount of tracks.

There were some boggy patches but passable.

Just how far you could manage would depend on your bike and off road ability.

You would probably save time by leaving the bikes at the Rothiemurchus Lodge. :)
After rain the boggy bits up to join the Lairig track from the Lodge might require some dismounting and pushing....to get further on a bike would be a bit of a toil …...with .lots of stone culverts to navigate or maybe even hop over on the bike. :)
I have only been on the Lairig track on the descent. Much easier walking. :)
Have you considered cycling up to close to Loch Eanaich ….Cairn Toul with a bit of doubling back to take in Braeriach with a descent of ridge between Coires Lochan and Ruadh…..you will end up a wee bit below the bikes ...recover and enjoy the fast ride out.
