Ettrick pen?

Ettrick pen?

Postby Outnabout » Mon Dec 09, 2019 11:14 am

Looking at this route for the weekend, the WH start point is over an hour farther than starting at cappelgill.

Is there parking down past cappelgill over the river? or is it parking at blackshope and therefore adding about a mile onto the walk.

Cheers.

Parking is at the end of the minor road at NT188092 per WH route description.

Or do you mean Hart Fell? :?

Not sure where you are meaning but when we did the circuit we parked at the end of the public road near Bushie Law as per the smc book. Works well.

Confused me too, but if I understand correctly, you are trying to do a different round to the WH one, starting at Bodesbeck on the Moffat Water? I don't know if you can park down there but it is a private access track so I'd doubt it. There is definitely space to park at Blackshope (as per the Hart Fell round), and if you have a look at Google streetview, you may spot somewhere slightly closer to the start of the Bodesbeck track. However I'd plan on starting at Blackshope and if you manage to get closer, then consider it a bonus.

I think I understand - much the same round, but starting from the A708, to avoid driving right round by the Gordon Arms or Eskdalemuir to get up to the head of the Ettrick road (presumably coming from the west).

I wasn't really thinking about parking places when I walked down through Bodesbeck, but it's definitely roughish track rather than road. Some people have talked about finding a spot at Capplegill itself.

Apologies if not clear enough, yeah starting at hartfell. Putting the route into os shows it will be over a 1/2 a mile each way from blackshope parking spot. If I could knock a bit of uninteresting walk off by parking at cappelgill or down that road be a welcome bonus

You can park at the trout farm at Barnside Cottage SW of Roundstonefoot. Drive down the big track & there's a big parking area just over the bridge.

Here's a walk report from April 2016 I didn't bother publishing.
