A Dream Coming True

A Dream Coming True

Postby Ibex » Mon Feb 10, 2020 7:09 pm

Greetings All.
Been a while since I posted here. Recently have agreed with my girlfriend to move up to the Lake District area.
We are hopefully moving up to the Workington area in March and my main concern is getting a job up there.
I am a scientist by trade, but will take on anything rather than be out of work.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice, I would be grateful to hear any of it!

One huge plus is that I can tick off the last 64 Wainwrights and hopefully complete this year. And then I can move onto more of the Southern Munro's as well.

Cheers.

Sellafield would be the best option for a scientist, depending on what your specialism is. West Cumbria is not the best place to be looking for work, unfortunately.

There are several science/engineering businesses on the Westlake Science and Technology Park just south of Whitehaven.

Thanks. I've been trying to find out what businesses are on the West Lake science park, but not been able to find it.

I can turn myself to anything really. Working in a physics lab at the moment, but I did a degree in biology and biochemistry.
Would be happy doing something in the environment too. Like the forestry commission or something.

I would just love to make a life up there!

I have no idea why this came up when I googled Science jobs in Cumberland, but they want a technician in St. Kilda!!!!

A little out the way for me. But very cool.

Being able to set up a life there with my girlfriend would be amazing for both of us. A huge health boost for us both.

If you Google "science park ingwell" the first item returned shows is a map. Click the map to expand it. This shows at least some of the businesses on the Westlakes Science Park.

Good luck for your future.

I used to live in Whitehaven so know the area pretty well. Unfortunately the big Albright & Wilson chemical plant shut down a few years ago, and Sellafield isn't the bottomless supply of jobs it once was (though still the biggest employer by far). Asides from Westlakes as others have mentioned, the West Cumberland hospital in Whitehaven sometimes recruits for lab-based posts, and Lilyhall industrial estate (nearer Workington) has a few employers. The college at Lilyhall (Lakes College) also has quite a few engineering and science related courses so teaching or lab assistant type posts come up there reasonably often.

Definitely worth checking out the National Nuclear Laboratory vacancies too ( https://www.nnl.co.uk/careers/current-vacancies/ )

Another suggestion if you fancy a complete career change is that the ambulance station for that area is at Lilyhall/Distington (so just outside Workington). The couple of ambulance stations in West Cumbria have struggled to recruit in the past I think, so you could see if North West Ambulance is doing any recruitment for Patient Transport or Technicians (I think Paramedics now do a 3 year Uni course before starting in an actual job).

There’s always work within the NHS. Possibly not in a science field right now, but lab jobs do come up.

https://www.jobs.nhs.uk/ and search Cumbria.

Good luck.
