...a one in a lifetime find, most snakes are in the 1-2m range. Occasionally hurdled over if seen too late though. ...then slithering off into the undergrowth unfazed by the encounter.

I think in Australia the smaller things are (snakes, spiders, etc.) the more lethal they are. Except for crocodiles. Bill Bryson asks in one of his books why Oz has so many lethal tiny things, wondering what they're protecting themselves against. Joking of course, but it does beg the question.

You do get used to thought of so many harmful beasts....otherwise you'd never leave the house !

Try not to Google, trapdoor spider, taipan, brown snake, irukandji jellyfish, tiger shark... they'll give you nightmares.

A shipment of spiders and snakes from Oz let loose in the Scottish Hills would have me doing 24/7 stay at home etc etc

...and another thing - if I was to be bitten I could always get better by having Dettol injected in my bloodstream and a UV lamp inserted in some handy orifice...

No need for that, I'm sure the good Doctor Cab would be able to amputate the stricken part at a very reasonable cost. :D

We waved off a long standing hill walking companion to Oz when he married an Ozzie. Fully expected to hear that he had succumbed to one or other of their poisonous beasties, but the only thing that seems to have changed is that his emails always go into my junk, even if I designate them non-junk. Is my in box quarantining itself?

The thought of UV Enema type equipment is absurd, isn't it? Erm..

I spent some time gold prospecting in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales/Victoria and one day saw a snake slither across my path. I poked my stick into the scrubby, heathery plants it had hidden in. Suddenly, and with some alacrity, the wretched reptile launched itself from the foliage and climbed up my stick! The stick went flying, I screamed like a girl and ran like the bloody hell away. I later descibed it to a bloke down in Jindabyne; "a brown snake about five feet long with a copper-coloured head", and he whistled and told me it's a copper-headed brown snake, very venomous and quite aggressive. Oh dearie me... I couldn't get used to the spiders, snakes, crocs, and the plethora of marine creatures all out to kill me.

Huntsman spider; not so venomous, but you have a heart attack at the sight of the thing...
