Cairn at bottom of Ben More

Cairn at bottom of Ben More

Postby Old Bill » Sun Apr 05, 2020 12:38 pm

Hi all,

Does anyone know what this cairn is for at the bottom of Ben More, not too far up from the farm and main road?

It seems to have been walled off at one point, but I couldn't see any plaque on it. Just wondering!

No idea, sorry, but the wall looks older than the cairn.

Just a thought. Could it be a memorial to those who died in the Viscount crash in 1973?

Could be - but the crash was higher up wasn't it? And there is a memorial to them in the church yard.

Yes, I saw that too. On second thoughts the cairn looks too old to commemorate that crash or the later rescue helicopter crash. Looks well built though and must have meant something at one time.

The memorial to Harry Lawrie, the MRT member who died in that crash, is the cross on Ben Ledi.
