5 mile radius - best & worst places to live vs. reality

5 mile radius - best & worst places to live vs. reality

Postby denfinella » Thu May 21, 2020 4:38 pm

OK, this is a bit of fun, and perhaps the 5 mile radius won't be a rule in the end, but if you were only allowed to exercise in a 5 mile radius...

1. What options would you have from your own home?
2. Where would the best place in Scotland be to live? :-D
3. Where would the worst place in Scotland be?

For me:

1. 5 miles from my house gives me access to pretty much all of Edinburgh (including Arthur's Seat), a bit of coastline and the northern end of the Pentland Hills. So not too bad really.

2. Best spots: Aviemore or Callander perhaps?

3. Worst spots: Kilmarnock perhaps? Or maybe somewhere in the barren interior of Caithness, like Halkirk!

Within a 5 mile radius the only peak of note is Hill of Beath, and I can explore the Fife coast between Charlestown and Aberdour.

Best place - Kinlochleven - a 5 mile radius gets some interesting places

Worst - somewhere up around Turiff, or the Butt of Lewis, or the Ayrshire coast.

1. Also S Edinburgh, so much the same as denfinella.

2. Kinlochleven is a good shout. Glenbrittle? Torridon? Fair Isle (cos' it makes no difference if you live there anyway)?

3. East side of Glasgow somewhere.

This site might help you decide - https://www.freemaptools.com/radius-from-uk-postcode.htm

From my home, I'm fortunate to live in a village just outside a big town, so I could walk on the footpaths in the surrounding countryside, walk around the park in town, or I could even walk the whole Horsham riverside walk, which is about 13 miles long but all of it is within five miles of my home.

Best place(s) to live in Scotland: Aviemore, Fort William, Braemar.
Worst place to live in Scotland, Ardrossan, one of the commuter towns along the M8 corridor, Gretna.

Ooooh yes, Arran is a good suggestion. Brodick would put you within 5 miles of proper hills, coastline, forest, a nice village, waterfalls and early history sites. And it's a touristy area so there are lots of paths.

Oban as the worst place - that's a bit harsh!

Good suggestion - the worst place suggested so far I would say, and with the added reminder that people a mile to the south across the border can go further afield!

Turriff is bad for hills, but it does have some nice local countryside, rivers and woodland, at least. And the Turra Coo! I reckon it would be a contender for the worst place if the radius was more like 20 miles.

Surely Gretna would be the best place to live. The border is within a five mile radius - so you walk over the border then you can do what you like. :D

Not bad for me, though being Shetland there's no big hills, but nice coast...

Worst place has got to be a city. Anywhere out side that is great.

There's nothing wrong with Turriff! No hills but all our lockdown walks have been within five miles of Turriff and we're managing a fair bit of low-level walk variety.

Best places: Stromness, Kylestrome, Strathcanaird, Dundonnell, Torridon, Torrin, Kinloch, Cleadale, North Locheynort, Ardhasaig, Tiroran, Craighouse...

Worst places: cities

It turns out that 5 miles is not the same in rural areas as it is in cities... https://www.vimeo.com/421106922.

5 miles.... I'd just make Devilla Forest I think. If not, then The Glen public park in Dunfermline.

Best Place - has to be up Torridon, Assynt way.

Worst Place - Spoiled for choice. Glasgow. Edinburgh. Anywhere in North Lanarkshire.
