New Coronavirus Law

Re: New Coronavirus Law

Also, there is a small risk that you could unintentionally come into contact with others on your hill walk so you should not leave your local area. This will reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus. However, you can travel as far as you want if the purpose of your journey is to meet up with friends and family.

This might sound contradictory to us, but I bet it plays well with highland voters.

make sure you keep a safe distance though as Science tells us:

Bourouiba, a fluid dynamics scientist at MIT, has spent the last few years using high-speed cameras and light to reveal how expulsions from the human body can spread pathogens, such as the novel coronavirus. Slowed to 2,000 frames per second, video and images from her lab show that a fine mist of mucus and saliva can burst from a person’s mouth at nearly a hundred miles an hour and travel as far as 27 feet. When the sternutation is over, a turbulent cloud of droplet-containing gas can remain suspended for several minutes, depending on the size of the droplet.

Meanwhile, what other Government guidelines are based in fact and not scare tactics?

"Whataboutism" is itself a form of the tu quoque fallacy, as it dismisses criticisms of one's own behaviour to focus instead on the actions of another, thus creating a double standard. Those who use whataboutism are not necessarily engaging in an empty or cynical deflection of responsibility: whataboutism can be a useful tool to expose contradictions, double standards, and hypocrisy.

Unlikely, the message here is still 'stay at home' despite the Scottish govt changing that yesterday.

I also note that WH is still carrying this message from mountain rescue:

"Should I feel guilty if I need to call MR?
No, accidents happen, we would be concerned if you didn't call us. We are here to help, not judge."

Walkers in Crianlarich took this advice and mountain rescue are supporting charges against them that carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

We've taken a very liberal approach to moderating this thread up to this point, but have deleted the latest post, which was a promotion of irrelevant conspiracy theories with no relevance to walking, following complaints.

The latest government guidance is extremely clear - "people should continue to stay in their local area (broadly within five miles) as much as possible and should not travel further for leisure or recreation."

People can discuss whether or not they think that is the correct guidance on this thread if they wish, but it is the official guidance.

Please keep any discussion on topic.

That advice is not 'extremely clear', it's vague - 'broadly', 'as much as possible' etc. You can travel 5 miles from you 'local community' but you have to stay within your 'local area'. The 5 mile limit is for urban areas but not rural communities, where does that leave those of us living in small towns on the outskirts of cities? You can travel further to meet people but not to exercise alone because we're trying to limit the spread of disease. Mountain rescue say it's OK to call them, then they support charges against walkers, then other mountain rescue teams distance themselves from that statement and point out that they're actually not part of Scottish Mountain Rescue, they're iSMR. None of this is clear.

I never seen the post you are referring to so i can't give an opinion on it (i would have liked to though). But surely it was just an opinion. This forum is all about opinion so why would you sensor someones opinion? lots of posts on these forums could be considered veiled conspiracy theories/opinions.

Josaff, the post removed had no relevance to or mention of hillwalking, or of Scotland.

Walkhighlands doesn't exist for people to spread fake news stories about random overseas events. Please see the moderation policy.

If that was the case then fair enough you had every right to sensor it

About time -

https://www.mountaineering.scot/news/testing-time-for-mountaineers

A group representing the interests of hillwalkers, mountaineers and skiers has described the continued restriction on travel for leisure activities as "frustrating".

Mountaineering Scotland said it welcomed the "positive progress" made in suppressing the virus, but has asked for greater allowances for outdoor activities.

The group has almost 15,000 members.

Chief executive Stuart Younie said he appreciated the "very difficult" decisions the Scottish government was having to make.

But he added: "While a lucky few who live within five miles or so of mountains have been able to restart their activities in Phase 1, that option remains closed to the vast majority, especially those living in the central belt."
