Stiles on Ben Challum

Stiles on Ben Challum

Hi, the route for Ben Callum on this site refers to awkward stiles. Is anyone able to say what that means. I'm wondering if my dog will get over them as he is too heavy for me to lift over high stiles! Thanks

There's pictures of a couple of them in my report - proper deer fence stiles a bit like climbing frames.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's enough of a hole at the bottom for a dog to wriggle through, there often is, but it's not something I was actually paying attention to.

Many thanks, I was hoping someone would have a photo. I'd never get him over that. Might struggle myself at the top (very short legs   ). Maybe someone will have been with a dog and know if we can get through. I looks like there are gaps in the fence to the right of the stile, but it maybe the light.

Skip fences by going up Gleann a'Chlachain and climbing the north west ridge of Challuim. Descend to the footbridge where Gleann a'Chlachain and the Caol Ghleann meet. You've a couple of waist-high fences to cross. One of them used to be electrified but I don't think that's there any more. It gave some amusement one winter's day when a sleet soaked and tired member of the party grabbed the wire.

Many thanks, I'll have a look at the route. I should be able to haul my collie over a waist high fence, though I'm not sure he'd be amused by an electric fence!!

Its quite nice with some optional (but entirely by passable) scrambling as well. You are less likely to see folk too until on the summit.
I quite enjoyed it despite nearly going through a cornice at one point!

I've also been up the voie-normale with a dog walker and I don't recall the large black lab having any issues.

Hello....I don't recall gates/stiles when reaching Ben Challum from the Glen Lochay approach to the hill.

I just walked around the fenced area when I got near to the enclosure where the stiles are. Took a bit extra time but no problems encountered at all . You will see it on the OS map...

Couple of photos here of my friend on the awkward stiles - hope that helps! Was a few years ago so not sure if anything is different now...Hopefully you at least won't need to deal with the sheet ice at the bottom
