OK, maybe not the type of Mountain slabs you were expecting.

Spotted a few days ago to the east of Glen Isla, near summit of Mid Hill. [NO 220 709]

Any ideas? Humorous or otherwise.

Bizzare :?
Lots of new estate tracks up that way. A nice patio to entertain the shooting classes on maybe? You'd think they would manage to get it a bit flatter though...

Well they are probably going to be used on an eroded area, I would have thought like many on the Pennine Way etc.
However they look like they have been laid out as a temporary Helicopter landing pad, (which was obviously used to bring them in)for further supplies. We used to build similar heli pads when I was in the army.

Unlikely to be anything to do with footpath erosion, as hardly any walkers go up here. Most visitors will be shooting. Your helicopter theory sounds more plausible, although with most coastguard/RAF helicopters able to land on all sorts of terrain, I'm not sure why they'd bother on such flat ground. Maybe if it is a common occurrence, stops it from getting churned up.

 Baffled me.

I would have thought a helicopter could easily land there without the slabs, but I'm no expert.

Tate gallery opening up a new exhibit, because we can't walk on the pebbles.

What a bizarre thing in such a beautiful location - after applying considerable thought, discussing with friends and trying the oracle that is google I have come up with this:-

I reckon the downdraft of a helicopter hovering over that would hurl the slabs around in a very dangerous manner. Looks like they are laid out to show how they will be when fixed with cement. Perhaps the laird has designs to build a large chess-board, using enslaved hillwalkers as chess-pieces?

hmmm...first needs a bed of mixed aggregate compressed and flattened then a dab of mortar at the four corners and one in the middle of each slab, tamp down and level off - not a good avert for slab laying

Sounds plausible to me. Just make sure you're not one of the first 32 walkers up there once it's properly in place ... :?
