Are you allowed to head up the glen late afternoon and camp out,stay in your car or van etc overnight
to be able to get an early start on these hills at all.

No overnight parking is allowed in the glen, see

Your registration number will be noted when you enter the glen and you'll be pointed at a sign with instructions staying no parking overnight, what time the gate shuts etc etc and asked to acknowledge that you understand - they used to give you a wee ticket but Covid days means no physical contact (I was there 3 weeks back).

If you want to camp overnight then you'll need to walk or cycle in.

Look into doing them from the north. Cuts out the total pain in the ass of sitting in a queue of cars at 9am when you could have been walking for an hour or two by then.

I arrived in the late afternoon ....walked in past the power station and got a sheltered spot up on Ruaidhe for a camp....traversed the next day and walked back out for a bus at the road end to get to Inverness.
For the Corbett, much later on, access from where you leave the motor .....don't need to go beyond the gate.

Or you could walk from Attadale to Struy over the hills.

So what happens if you don't get back in time and the gate's locked? Is it just a matter of waiting till the next day when they open it?

We drove in late afternoon, set up the tents and drove out again, then cycled back to get an early start the next morning, on the day the glen is closed. Left the bikes at the end of the walk and walked back to the tents the evening before.
