Hi from San Francisco and NYC

Hi from San Francisco and NYC

Postby kiai » Mon Feb 18, 2019 8:55 am

Hello.
My partner, Mike, and I are traveling from San Francisco and New York to Scotland in April and are planning to do some hikes, but I'd like to find 1-hour hikes, preferably with views. We will drive from Edinburgh to a lodge near Dornoch. We have a day planned for a longer hike, but I'd love to find a short one on the way to Loch Carron, or on the way to Dornoch. Many thanks for suggestions!

How's the Ring Fort Trail in the Allean Forest?

Probably wouldn't be my first choice - it's mostly in a commercial forestry plantation.

Have a look at:
Loch an Eilean https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/cairngorms/loch-an-eilein.shtml
Loch Morlich https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/cairngorms/loch-morlich.shtml
Loch Garten https://www.countryfile.com/go-outdoors/walks/walk-loch-garten-highland/
Ryvoan (just go as far as the lochan) https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/cairngorms/ryvoan.shtml

Should add that on the way north we are planning to stop at the Highland Folk Museum, which opens at 10:30am. Wanted to get a walk in before then without having to backtrack. But maybe I need to rethink our itinerary (??). Maybe we should leave Edinburgh at 5 and climb Ben Vrackie? Anything like Ben Vrackie that would take 2 or 3 hours? Thoughts on Meall na Leitreach or Craigower?

I'm clueless. Sorry to keep bumping this thread.

Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh is a nice little walk. Depending on your route up, you could stop in Newtonmore for a walk into Glen Banchor.

I found this starting at the Glen Banchor car park (which I've added onto Google Maps): https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/maps/map2_9cg.shtml
Someone wrote a play-by-play (step-by-step?) starting on the east side of the circuit. http://steverabone.com/MunroWalker/a_chailleach.htm I think we will take this path for a mile or two.

THANK YOU @Scottk!

Glen Banchor is not a bad option, but if you have a couple of hours, then I would suggest Creag Bheag behind Kingussie. See https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/cairngorms/creagbheag.shtml and note that the Tom Baraidh section can be omitted if you are short of time by returning straight down the road from the Golf Course.
