Walkhighlands

Hi,
50yr old planning a tour down the west coast next year - October, with young family.
Descended from fisher folk in Buckie.
Lots of hill walking experience in the Lake District but very little in Scotland. Only Ben Nevis..
Challenge is to swim in the sea every day from the beautiful looking beaches - so hoping for a little bit of decent weather at least!

Welcome back to the ancestral homeland! In the North -West Highlands you could try Achmelvich beach near Lochinver, north of Ullapool. There is a nice campsite with showers and toilets, a sandy beach surrounded by moorland. Ullapool itself has a good campsite by the sea. Great area for seafood if you like it. Stick to the coast south of Ullapool and you have a nice drive through brilliant scenery down to Loch Carron, Kyle of Lochalsh where it would be a criminal offence to not visit the Isle of Skye. Campsites at Glen Brittle and Sligachan are well worth visiting. The ferry from Armadale on Skye to Mallaig on the mainland takes you on the road back south to Fort William and on down to Oban, south of Oban to Kilmartin Glen and the Cowal Peninsula, Knapdale and the Mull of Kintyre. Look out for forests in autumn colours, eagles far above,stags bellowing at each other for the rut, the big mating territorial battle between the red deer. Otters and seals by the coast, dolphins from the Mallaig ferry, beavers in the lochs of Knapdale, the Crinan Canal with busy boat traffic, ancient burial mounds and standing stones at Kilmartin Glen, ruined castles on islands, and all the lovely impressive scenery of the West Highlands.
