Walkhighlands

Hi all,

We (husband, wife and generally well behaved beagle pup) have used the site many times to download walks in the highlands. We took the Munro plunge this weekend and managed Beinn Ghlas and Ben Lawers and have now just registered on here. No doubt we looked like amateurs, and our aching limbs proved that we have some distance to go, but we did our best to be sensibly equipped and prepared....and loved it! We now need to decide where next, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. To keep our momentum going, we don't want to run before we can walk(!) and somewhere that we can easily get to there and back in the same day from Fife would be perfect. Also, any recommendation for online boots, equipment etc would be great.

glen lyon should be within easy reach for you and has a few munro's, as for boots everyone has their own opinion on what is best, i wear scarpa hillmasters and cant fault them, they have covered hundreds of miles in all weathers and conditions , have never leaked and will take a flexible crampon, one thing i think you should do is go somewhere with knowledgeable staff and you can get your feet properly measured, for other not so important(regarding size) bits and pieces, http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/ or http://www.tiso.com/

Ben Chonzie is a nice easy one. Would also recommend the Go Outdoors site - you will be struggling to find a cheaper place to shop for kit - they are consistantly cheap (think that's why Tiso have been dropping their prices) and if you get a chance, hit one of their stores - "kid in a sweetie shop" springs to mind!

I've just done Beinn Challum and Beinn Mhanach (near Tyndrum) and they were both easy/straightforward. The Munros either side of Glen Lochay are pretty easy. Also the ones from the Pass of Drumochter on the A9 are easy - the ones on the west side are really nice too...

hi and welcome to the site... Schiehallion is a relatively easy up and down munro for you. I would advise tackling it very early tho to avoid the rush.. was on the summit back in November I think it was about 830 am and met about 60 people on the way down.

Hi, welcome to the game, congratulations on your first Munros. One of the benefits of going back to the same area (around Killin) is that you can get some more nice high starts to your walks, this will help you ease into the hill-walking effort! Meall nam Tarmachan is a great hill, along with its ridge, and you're at 450m to start (it's opposite and at a similar start height to your jaunt up Ben Lawers). Stuchd an Lochain is another good hill with a 400m start and from the same startpoint there's Meall Buidhe on the other side of Loch an Daimh; in fact if you're feeling really strong both can be done in a day.

There's plenty more around Glens Lyon and Lochay as the guys have said.

Then there's Cruach Ardrain and Beinn Tulaichean as an introduction to the Crianlarich hills, these can be approached from the north or south.
