Greetings from WI, USA
Posted: Sun Apr 12, 2020 3:51 pmScotland calls to my heart. I've been twice--the first time, for a 4 day stay in Newtonmore in 2016 (where one highlight was stumbling onto the ancient Pict fort location), and the 2nd time, in 2019, when my sister and I did the Rob Roy Way (RRW).
We have many beautiful places to walk in the US, but as a teacher, I am limited to summer vacations. A lot of our summer weather is hot, or hot and humid. And very buggy. Beyond the midges and some flies, Scotland seems to be bug-free, especially during the day. And such wonderful weather--relatively speaking. For someone from WI, where we have had highs of 103 F, and lows at -30 F (with windchill, -50), your climate feels so temperate. I'm a jogger so rain has never bothered me, plus I've been lucky to have clear weather nearly all my time in Scotland.
My sister and I hope to make our next visit to the Isle of Skye. Neither of us are terribly adventuresome--so no narrow trails with steep drops, please. We seemed to do well on the RRW, although that one 14 mile day had us at the edge of our endurance (and was the only day I forgot my sock liners--oh, what a mistake). We were fine the next day, though. I'm guessing for you real walkers/ramblers/wanderers/amblers, the RRW isn't much of a challenge. I just mention it to give you some idea of our capabilities.
So, while I'm planning well in advance and may not get back until 2022, I hope to make some friends here and get some good tips.
Please feel free to ask any questions about the US. I've lived or traveled all around the eastern 3rd of our nation--Atlantic coast to the Mississippi. I'm eager to help you plan a trip to the US, if you are so inclined.
