After a monster night out in Windermere we set out with an unsteady gait to teeter on the rocks of Striding Edge. Good idea? Maybe not.

The weather came and went with some rain, snow and then cleared up whilst having lunch on Helvellyn.

This has got to be one of my favourite walks and, despite the crowds on Saturday, it was thoroughly enjoyable. We waited for a crowd-free pocket and then strode out, edgily, making sure we made footfall on every single mini peak! It was huge fun.

Great pics!

Striding Edge was one of my favourite walks for last year. It was my first ever attempt at an arete so was really satisfying.

Did the chimney at the far end catch you out or were you expecting it?

No, I'd done it before and warned the others. We were descending above some guy with really long legs, and could not follow him! I found another route off which was fine.

My photos weren't great, but Nick had a proper camera. I'll get some more off him.

Always think it's a pity that Catstycam which has the only proper top in the Helvellyns is lower than Helvellyn - which is like Bradgate Park on top. Then again it keeps the crowds away.
