A great walk across the high moors with superb views to the Cheviot and surrounding hills and sometimes E to the sea.

Left car in strong, gusty winds, to head S, then climb SW, on hard core farm track. Joined St Cuthbert's Way (SCW) after 1.5km. Followed way to a stile/gate to turn R and follow way upwards with Yeavering Bell to N and Newton Tors to SW. Reached a gate from where views open S to Great Moor and and beyond to the Cheviot and Hedgehope.

Superb level (if occasionally boggy} walking followed for 3 -4 km across wide open, high moorland, with great views all round - even out to sea at times. The Way continued to a small gorge (steeper then the map contours suggest) between the tops of Black Law and Gains Law. I climbed steadily up the S flank of Gains Law to continue E, passing the summit of Humbleton Hill to the N, the descended SE, then E, to a wood where the Way led S to Wooler Common car Park. En route colourful birds (various finches and tits) flew around bird feeders. From the car park exit I left SCW and took the single track road into Wooler. It was mostly sunny throughout and - despite the wind - hugely enjoyable.
