I am going stir crazy walking within a reasonable distance from my house, so here is a blast from the past.
1998 Trek to Nepal and Kalapthar (Overlooking Everest Base Camp). At 58 & 59 we had thought we had better do this before we got too old. All bar one of the other people on this trek, including the leader, were young enough to be our children. We both managed to get to the summit of Kalapathar,(5644m) but it took enormous will power for R to do it, as his lungs were already congested, and he was suffering from either pneumonia or altitude sickness. He managed downhill for a couple of nights and then the leader Jon took us down to 14,000 feet in the hopes it would get better. When it didn't, we were evacuated by helicopter to a hospital in Khatmandu, where the doctor said a clean hotel room would be better for him than an iffy hospital. After a couple of days R insisted on wandering around again, but was diagnosed with pneumonia when we got home. Despite that, it was a great trip.

Fascinating stuff Sgurr! A lot of drama crammed in as usual it seems, even back then, and nice to see film photos in the forum :) Always blown away by the wonderful contrast between the brown sunniness of the 'glens' vs the petrifying blue, black and white of the summits in photos of that area.

Great pics - brought back happy memories. We went the following spring with our kids as our friends were working out there and got married at Namche.

Great experience among such friendly people - thanks for reminding me! Good to dream of things post COVID!
