Southern Black Mountains
Posted: Wed Mar 16, 2011 11:40 pmA day started by a nice short circuit of perhaps the two best peaks in the Black Mountains - Pen Cerrig-Calch is a broad quite stony mountain with a very good wide southern view, and Pen Allt-Mawr an uncharacteristically prominent-looking and pointy summit. Decent ridge-walking in between, and a very pleasant route.
Having climbed Waun Fach before developing the sort of instinct that would have sent me a mere 1 mile away to visit Pen y Gadair Fawr at the same time (even with very tired legs...), this was a short 'bagging' route to take in the latter top. The Mynydd Du forest is rather more attractive and less regimented than most of the newer coniferous woods around, and there are plenty of walkers about - if not many taking the faintly-pathed direct route up the steep grassy face of the mountain. The summit is quite a nice one with views typical of the area, but this is a slightly uninspiring approach to it...
