Hi going to the lakes for a week in October .... not climbed in the area before so planning in doing Sacfell Pike ,some advise on safest and quickest route as some family are joining me ....and any other I should try as a first timer to this area ....... thanks

Go from the parking spot at Wasdale just after Wast Water and head up the Brown Tongue route following the Lingmell Gill.
Come back down the same way. Bit rough under foot near the top but nothing too bad. Follow the cairns across Hollow Stones if it's a bit claggy. Can't comment on other routes up or any other walks in the area.

I would agree that the tourist route mentioned above is the safest way up the Pike, Its a bit tedious compared to to other routes but still affords good views on a clear day. As for other routes it kind of depends exactly where you are staying in the Lakes, It can take far longer than you think to get to many places, even if your are staying in the national park.

Where are you staying?

Though the standard route from Wasdale Head makes most sense, it you're staying the other side of the hill it might be better, though longer, from Seathwaite or similar.

Certainly - as Mal says - a more attractive and (by the Corridor Route) easier route from Seathwaite and not really too much longer. But depends entirely on where you're staying - from many places Wasdale would be a very long drive, and if you're near Windermere for instance it probably makes sense to take a longer walk in from Great Langdale. I don't think it's unsafe from any direction in good weather (navigating the summit area in very poor visibility might be a problem as no real obvious paths and some dangerous spots if lost) but it's rough underfoot at the top always.

Depending on where you're based, almost everyone in 'Outside Scotland' will have a lot of thoughts about recommended other walks for your week!
