Hi all

This is just a post to let all followers of Walk Highlands & especially those who took time time to read Trailmasher's "epic" posts over the years know that sadly last week he passed away. :(

He unfortunately became unwell towards the end of last year (Nov/Dec) & was admitted to hospital with what was discovered to be a heart problem. On the 11/3 they operated & although the operation was initially successful, TM continued to deteriorate as he had become so weak with the months of fighting & on Wednesday 16th March, Jon passed.

In the almost 7 years i knew TM, he amazed me with his knowledge, fitness & enthusiasm for all things walking, especially the lakeland fells. Despite our age difference (nearly 30 yrs) we became "proper" mates during our time together. I owe my knowledge & successful completion of the Wainwrights along with many other Birketts, Hewitts, Howgills etc to Jon.
He will be sorely missed by all that knew him & I'm sure even on this forum he will be missed.
i guess many of you will have read his recollections of walks, put together in such detail along with pics that you could actually do a route straight from the report :D
Keep on walking people & stay safe :D

R.I.P Jon, gone but never forgotten x

This is sad news indeed.

TM's reports were always well written and illustrated, with great descriptions that clearly showed his love for the hills, as well as masses of information, and inspiration, for others to follow.

Very sorry to hear of the loss of your friend.

Very sad and best wishes to you and those who knew him, a true WH stalwart. His enthusiasm bubbled up through all he wrote, and his last report doesn't seem a bad epitaph: "you get what you can when you can.. it was an enjoyable one as ever and as long as I’m out I really don’t mind where I go for a walk."

RIP.

Sad news indeed, TM was always helpful when I asked for advise when i enquired about start points to walks, always willing to help even though we'd not met in person.
As already said, his attention to detail in his reports was so helpful, well written and a joy to read.

Hell be missed on this Forum.

That's so very sad and quite a shock to hear. Condolences to you and all who knew him personally. I shall certainly miss his walk reports which were so full of information and detail and characterized by a distinctive writing style. His enthusiasm for walking and love of the fells always shone through.

Devastating is an under statement. Although I never met him I felt knew him a little from countless times I interacted with him on this website. I always thought we’d bump into one another on the hills one day, sadly not.
My deepest sympathies to yourself and his other friends and family. RIP TM

Oh heck, that really is tough. Like JKLL, I never met him but I felt we in some way knew each other from all the conversations we had on this forum about our respective walks; and I too hoped we’d bump into one another on the hills one day.

My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Having just spent a few days doing hills in the western Lake District, I realised I've read quite a few of Trailmasher's great reports. It's sad to hear he passed away so recently.
