Mallerstang is a nice valley. Traditionally a Westmorland Dale rather than a Yorkshire one. You did well to do all this carrying full camping gear. Sounds like you had a really good 2 days overall, despite the not so good bit.
To travel lighter, over one day, a good alternative option is from Kirkby Steven to Wild Boar Fell, Swarth Fell, then down to Aisgill Cottages and up onto High Seat. Then north and up Nine Standards Rigg, and back down to Kirkby Steven. I did that in 2011 and found it a great route, like a much quieter Westmorland alternative to the Yorkshire 3 Peaks.
