Cracking... That cliff formation is strange as well - an escarpment of some sort?

It is an escarpment which forms the uppermost part of the glacial U shaped valley on both it's sides. The rim of cliffs at the head of the valley are the most impressive and and the highest but they taper out lower down the valley. Google it and you will find plenty reference / pics of what is a "North country highlight".

Thanks for that: it was just one of those days. It would have been easy to turn back or not even set off.

High cup Nick is a great Day out. I did it a couple of years ago from the Tees in good weather. :

Hadn't thought about approaching it from the North. Thanks for the suggestion CG

Thank you very much. High Cup is a must see and is dramatic in most weathers: assuming you can see it it that is. All approaches are good and an approach from the north can be made from Dufton by following Maize Beck out of Great Rundale Tarn. I recently approached from Murton (good free car park) and Murton Fell (a boggy Hewitt) and retured along the eastern cliffs before cutting over Trundale Gill and Murton Pike (fantastic views) and back to Murton.
Enjoy your trip whichever way you do it.
