It is an escarpment which forms the uppermost part of the glacial U shaped valley on both it's sides. The rim of cliffs at the head of the valley are the most impressive and and the highest but they taper out lower down the valley. Google it and you will find plenty reference / pics of what is a "North country highlight".

Spectacular inversion PG, not sure how I missed it first time round but I'm thankful for your delayed response to 'Trickeyja' for bring these beautiful photos back around. What a glorious day for a hike....roll on summer

Absolutely amazing pictures. A day in the hills doesn't get much better than that I'm now inspired to visit High Cup Nick ASAP.

High cup Nick is a great Day out. I did it a couple of years ago from the Tees in good weather. :

Thank you very much. High Cup is a must see and is dramatic in most weathers: assuming you can see it it that is. All approaches are good and an approach from the north can be made from Dufton by following Maize Beck out of Great Rundale Tarn. I recently approached from Murton (good free car park) and Murton Fell (a boggy Hewitt) and retured along the eastern cliffs before cutting over Trundale Gill and Murton Pike (fantastic views) and back to Murton.
Enjoy your trip whichever way you do it.

Wow Grizz.....what an absolute stunner!! I hope to be up that way in a couple of weeks time when I drop Step-son back to Uni in Lancaster. I was thinking that I was going to have a go at the Yorks three peaks....well at least one of two of them!.....now you have given me a some real food for thought as this looks totally stunning!
