A last-minute wish to 'go and climb something' - despite the mist and wind - in the little remaining daylight sent me to this short walk in the western moors of the Peak District, taking in the 559m highest point of Cheshire at Shining Tor (not as handsome as its name!). This was a very well-pathed and obviously popular route, quite busy even on a grim day, with only the short drop from Cats Tor to the road requiring a little boghopping. The high moor looks incredibly wet and boggy and it's hard to imagine what it was like before being repathed (gravel up to the summit, quite attractively flagged along the ridge). No views at all through the mist, but quite pleasant walking along the narrowing high ridge and then the grassier Foxlow edge heading back south and then back down through the woods.
